Zakat-ul-Fitr – HADI Relief

Zakat-ul-Fitr

Giving Zakat-ul-Fitr (also known as fitrana) is one of the duties we must complete during the holy month of Ramadan. Similar to zakat given on an individual’s savings, it also entails giving a small amount to charity.

Purify Your Fast, Spread Joy

Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana, is an obligatory charity that every self-supporting Muslim must give at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is a beautiful act of worship that purifies your fast, uplifts the less fortunate, and ensures that everyone in the community can share in the joy of Eid.

What is Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana)?

Zakat al-Fitr is a charitable donation given in the form of staple food or its monetary equivalent. It is due on behalf of every member of a household, including children and dependents.

Ibn `Abbas said:

“The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined Zakat Al-Fitr so that those who fast are purified of their sins and the poor and needy are fed. Therefore, whoever gives it before the `Eid prayer, it will be counted for him as an acceptable Zakah (of al-Fitr), but if someone delays and gives it afterwards, his charity will be an ordinary one.”[ Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]

This simple act of giving brings blessings to your fast and ensures that no one is left behind on the day of Eid.

FAQ

Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for:

  • Every Muslim who has food in excess of their needs
  • The head of the household, who must pay for themselves and their dependents

Unlike regular Zakat, it is not based on wealth, but rather on having enough to meet your basic needs.

Ibn `Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said,

“”The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, enjoined the payment of one Sa` of dates or one Sa` of barley as Zakat Al-Fitr on every Muslim, young and old, male and female, free and slave.”Al-Bukhari and Muslim
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prescribed one Sa’ of staple food per person. A Sa’ is the equivalent of 2.5–3 kg of food.

Today, this is often translated into a monetary value based on local food prices. For HADI Relief, the recommended amount is $X per person, which allows us to provide food for those in need.

Zakat al-Fitr must be paid before the Eid prayer, ideally during the last days of Ramadan. Payments made after the Eid prayer count as general charity (Sadaqah), not Zakat al-Fitr.
