A Pillar of Islam, A Path to Blessings
What is Zakat ?
Zakat, meaning “to purify,” is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a mandatory annual payment of 2.5% of your wealth for those whose assets exceed the Nisab threshold. By fulfilling this obligation, you purify your wealth and heart from greed while helping those suffering from poverty, hunger, and displacement.
“And establish prayer and give Zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves – you will find it with Allah. Indeed, Allah of what you do, is Seeing.”
[– Surah Al-Baqarah (2:110)]
Who is Eligible for Zakat?
The Quran identifies eight categories of people eligible to receive Zakat:
- The poor
- The needy
- Zakat administrators
- Those captive
- Those in debt
- In the cause of Allah (SWT)
- The stranded traveler
“As-Sadaqat (here it means Zakat ) are only for the Fuqara’ (poor), and Al-Masakin (the poor) and those employed to collect (the funds), and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam), and to free the captives, and for those in debt, and for Allah’s Cause (i.e. for Mujahidun – those fighting in a holy battle), and for the wayfarer (a traveller who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise.”[– Surah At-Tawba (9:60)]
