Food Crisis in Afghanistan

For decades, the Afghan population has been trapped in the middle of conflicts, with several related international and economic sanctions, a changing climate, and underemployment. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated their problems, leaving more than 19 million Afghans in dire need of food. The World Food Program’s (WFP) surveys show that over nine out of ten families in the country are food insecure, with half of them having to skip meals due to the lack of resources.

Eleven million people in Afghanistan are experiencing food insecurity, and 97 percent of the country’s population is on the brink of disaster. Nearly 20 million people in Afghanistan – almost half the population – are facing acute hunger, humanitarians warned in an UN-backed report, with the situation being further compounded by the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.
